Spitaki

It’s been a while since I last wrote a blog post – I have been very busy travelling with Robert in the last couple of months, but I’ll try to catch up!

Last month we went to Edinburgh, a city I love and I was lucky to visit quite often for work reasons in the past.

Edinburgh has a very vibrant restaurant scene and, although this is definitely a plus, it means that it is extremely difficult to book a table if you leave it to the last minute (like we did on this occasion!).

Our B&B was located in a very quiet residential street just 10 minutes from Princes Street. Not knowing the area very well, I did a quick search on Tripadvisor to check out the restaurants nearby – I was intrigued by the good reviews that Spitaki, a small, family-run Greek taverna, was receiving. Luckily they had a table for 8pm that evening so there we went!

The first nice touch from the management was a reply to my online reservation, just to welcome us.

When we arrived at the restaurant, we were shown our table in a nice and quiet area corner.

The concept of the restaurant is simple: few ‘mezedes’ (i.e. small dishes) on the menu, to be ordered to share and being served as soon as they are ready (no particular order) – just as they do in Greece!

The selection of mezedes was very good, ranging from meat and fish dishes to vegetarian ones. We decided to order some dolmades (one of my favourite dish), a Greek salad (rigorously with feta), fried potatoes, octopus, chicken souvlaki and lamb chops.

Well… The quality of the ingredients was outstanding – everything was so fresh, including the tomatoes, which normally in this country are never as juicy as the ones you eat in Italy or Greece.

We also had dessert (even I had dessert!) – a slice of Ravani, with orange zest, and a slice of Bougatsa, filo pastry with custard. Both delicious and not overly sweet.

All this was accompanied by some lovely prosecco, Mythos beer and a nice bottle of  ‘King of Hearts’ red wine from Nico Lazaridi (I understand he is one of the best wine producers in Greece).

The bill came to just under £80, which was fantastic value considering the quality of the food and drinks and the friendly service we experienced.

Since I have been back I have reccomended this restaurant to few friends and I will definitely go back next time I am in Edinburgh!
